Site Upgrades Coming to FOS

Complete overhauls of our site and forums are scheduled to be unveiled next week. Check out the details and learn what you can do to prepare for the changes right here.

A new head coach. New uniforms. New pre- and post-game traditions.

It is a time of change for the Penn State football program. So here at, we figured it was the perfect chance to kick off a new era for our online community, as well.

As you will see in the next week or so, the site will be undergoing a complete redesign. We are scrapping our antiquated content management system and forums for state-of-the-art technology. Millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours have been invested into these upgrades.

Significant upgrades most noticeable right off the bat will include:

• The long-awaited mobile options for the site and forums. For the site, which will dynamically resize depending on device and/or screen size, we are implementing the same technology currently in use by the Boston Globe (check it out at:

• The ability for YOU to customize the forums the way you want to. Stay tuned for more on this. It is pretty slick.

• The ability for you to integrate your FOS account with your social media accounts. Tweet a post you just made and/or “like” a post to Facebook with simple clicks. Other social media networks are supported, too.

• The ability to receive e-mail alerts on forums posts.

• A vastly improved video system.

• The ability for YOU to post videos and photos to the site.

• A functioning search tool.

There are so many improvements, we can't possibly list them all here. But we think you get the picture.

Most of what happens will be seamless. But here are a few things to keep in mind as we approach the upgrade:

• For functionality and security purposes, we are encouraging folks to upgrade to the latest version of their preferred browsers. This is especially important for anyone using Internet Explorer 7. If you need help with this, ask a mod.

• The forums WILL continue to have a private messaging function. However, old private messages WILL NOT be migrated into the new system. If there is anything you would like to save, we encourage you to do it now.

• Old posts WILL be migrated into the new system. However, when we move to the new forums, there will be a period of a few days when posts made on these forums WILL NOT be moved to the new ones. That period began Wednesday afternoon.

• Your current username WILL be migrated into the new system. The ability to view posts counts WILL NOT be included in the new system. However, your post count WILL be factored in with our new “badge” system, as will the length of time you've been in the community and the quality of your posts (stay tuned for more on this). The idea is to improve the emphasis on quality posts as opposed to rewarding post-padding.

These are significant upgrades. Because of that, we cannot give you an exact date for when they will go live — not yet, at least. Our primary concern right now is delivering the best possible product for our community, so we will not sacrifice quality to meet some hard and fast deadline. Our goal is to have everything up and running next week.

We're letting you know now because we view YOU as a very important part of this transition. Once the process starts, by all means, let us know what you like and do not like. We will set up special forum threads so you can hit us with your feedback — positive and negative.

After all, this is YOUR site. And, as always, it is YOUR community.

It is just going to be a little more high tech.

Thank you in advance for your patience and feedback as we move to get there.
