Kicker Impresses at Camps

Bishop Hoban HS's Gerry McGroarty could be the top place kicker in Pennsylvania for the 2003 season. He attended 3 camps this summer. How did he do? What schools are most interested in him. Does he have a favorite?

Name: Gerry McGroarty
Position: K
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 180 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.7
School: Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Bishop Hoban HS)

Last season for Hoban, Gerry hit 11 field goals, with a long of 53 yards. He chipped in with 15 extra points, going perfect for the season. He's also a defense's best friend, nailing 85% of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

Gerry attended kicking camps at Connecticut, Penn State and Boston College this summer.

UConn and Penn State seem to be the major contenders for the Pennsylvania kicker.

"Boston College has offered 2 kids," Gerry said, "so I think they are pretty much set with what they are doing, but UConn and Penn State seem to be interested.

"I did pretty well [at UConn]. I liked UConn a lot. I was impressed with the campus and everything, and the coaches."

McGroarty, who is being recruited by Penn State assistant coach Dick Anderson, attended the June 13 kicking camp in State College.

"I finished top in kickoffs. I was also there for the Blue-White game and a couple of games in the fall.

"I forgot about Buffalo. I think I'm going to be visiting up there soon."

Gerry previously mentioned having high interest in Notre Dame, but he has not heard much from the Fighting Irish and has not visited there.

Duquesne and Massachusetts have interest in him as a swimmer.

"I'm just being patient. It's a long process."
