PSU Will be Ruth-less to Open Season

The Nittany Lions' two-time NCAA champion has been suspended for breaking team rules. He will miss the first two dual meets of the season but his fate beyond that is not clear.

It turns out the only person who can stop Penn State wrestler Ed Ruth is … Ed Ruth.

The Nittany Lions' top-ranked 184-pound senior, coming off back-to-back undefeated, national-championship seasons, has been suspended for this week's season-opening dual meets at Rider and Lehigh.

Penn State coach Cael Sanderson opened his Wednesday press conference with the following statement:

“Ed Ruth broke team rules yesterday. He will not be wrestling this weekend. Not going to comment on that really any more than that. But just so you know.”

Sanderson was asked if the suspension is just for this weekend.

“We're going to figure out what were going to do,” Sanderson said. “But definitely this weekend, yes.”

Penn State is ranked No. 1 in the preseason. The Nittany Lions have won three straight national titles.

Sophomore James Franscella, who went 11-7 in open tournaments last season, will take Ruth's place this weekend.
