"It was an amazing visit being able to go on a tour and actually spend time with Coach (Rhett) Lashlee and Coach (Gus) Malzahn," McIlwain said of Auburn's offensive coordinator and head coach. "It was an awesome experience for my first time at Auburn."
Sitting down with the coaching staff and talking football was just part of the day for the 6-1, 205 prospect as he also got to see Auburn's new dorm complex as well as the student center and the new wellness kitchen, which is scheduled to open this summer. Those were all impressive he said, but the biggest part of the day was the time he spent with the coaches.
"It broke all expectations that I had," McIlwain said. "I knew I was going to come down for a visit and I knew all the success they had been having. I knew they had great facilities, but seeing the dorm and how amazing the dorm was and all the facilities was great. Being able to talk to Coach Lashlee and Coach Malzahn and really see their visions for the program was great to see.
"We were really talking about their game-planning and the things they do," he added. "We run a very similar offense so he was just showing me the differences between theirs and ours and how I would fit in well with the offense."
"That's what I'm working on now," McIlwain said. "Throughout the summer I'll be visiting as many schools as I can. After the summer I'll narrow it down to somewhere between five and seven. I think Auburn will definitely make the list though. It was an amazing experience. I still have a lot of schools to see those experiences, but it was amazing."
