Penn State football coach James Franklin met new PSU athletic director Sandy Barbour for the first time Saturday morning. They chatted during a get-together at university president Eric Barron's house shortly before a press conference announcing Barbour's hire.
It was a brief conversation, Franklin reported, saying he looks forward to getting to better know Barbour on professional and personal levels.
But, he added, some of his people know some of her people. So in a sense, the two most visible figures in the school's athletic department already have the lowdown on one another.
I understand her background and where she's from, Franklin said. I know people that know her. She knows people that know me and my background, as well. So there is mutual respect there. Now we just have to continue to develop that relationship and that trust and that bond.
“There is mutual respect there. Now we just have to continue to develop that relationship and that trust and that bond.”
That's not likely to happen soon, though. Barbour does not start full-time at Penn State until Aug. 18, and in the meantime the former Cal athletic director must return to the West Coast to prepare for her permanent move to Pennsylvania.
Franklin, meanwhile, heads to Big Ten Media Days in Chicago Sunday through Tuesday. The Nittany Lions begin preseason camp Aug. 4.
So when will he have time to really get to know the new AD?
You'd love for it to happen in the next week, Franklin said. But that's not gonna happen. It's gonna happen naturally over time.
