The Big Ten Player of the Week honors continue to show what a crazy season Penn State is having.
The Nittany Lions are mired in a four-game losing streak and have not actually won a game since Sept. 20. They are 1-4 in league play.
But after Saturday's 20-19 loss to Maryland at Beaver Stadium, senior K Sam Ficken was named the Big Ten's Special Teams Player of the Week.
This on the heels of WR DaeSean Hamilton being named conference Freshman of the Week in a double-overtime loss to Ohio State Oct. 25.
Ficken was the clear-cut MVP for Penn State in the loss to Maryland. He was good on all four of his field-goal attempts, including three from farther than 45 yards. His season-best 48-yarder in the fourth quarter gave the Lions a 19-17 lead.
Ficken ranks third in the nation in field goals per game with 2.13 and 10th in accuracy (89.5 percent). He lead the Lions in scoring (68 points), something he did in the previous two seasons.
With 47 career field goals, Ficken is now tied with Travis Forney for third on PSU's all-time list.
He has been named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week four times in his career, which is tied for fifth in conference history.
