Penn State Shell Shocks Terrapins

The Nittany Lion wrestlers welcomed Maryland to the Big Ten on Thursday, handing the Terrapins a 38-3 loss at the Xfinity Center in College Park.

Thursday marked the first time Maryland has faced Penn State on the wrestling mats since 2007. Penn State wrestling legend Kerry McCoy became the wrestling head coach for the Terrapins in 2008. That last match took place at University Park where PSU dominated Maryland 34-3. Aside from both squads now residing in the Big Ten, this time around wasn't much different.

Penn State's No. 4 wrestling squad (4-0, 1-0 B1G) opened up their conference slate winning nine of 10 bouts en route to a 38-3 victory over Maryland (4-5, 0-3 B1G). The Nittany Lions dominated, holding a stunning 31-1 advantage in takedowns over the Terrapins with falls by Matt Brown at 174 and Morgan McIntosh at 197 and four major decisions.

As PSU coach Cael Sanderson said, “I think our guys wrestled pretty well coming off a quick turnaround from the Nittany Lion Open. Our conditioning looked good. We’re just looking for progress.”

As McCoy said about facing his alma mater, “It’s kind of that bittersweet situation. As an alum, it’s good to see your alma mater do well. But as competition, we want to go out there, and we want to take them out.”
