What was considered by many to be a "rebuilding" year for the Penn State women's volleyball program ended up being a record-breaking season for the Nittany Lions. After beating No. 1 seed Stanford 3-1 in the the NCAA Final Four Thursday, No. 5 PSU faced unseeded Brigham Young in the championship match Saturday evening in Oklahoma City.
After a fast start, Russ Rose’s club was challenged a bit by BYU in the second set. But the Lions rallied to win that frame and then breezed to close out the match in the third.
PSU swept its way (25-21, 26-24, 25-14) to back-to-back NCAA championships and an unprecedented seventh national title. The Lions had been tied with Stanford for the most NCAA women's volleyball crowns with six each.
Penn State has now won six championships over the past eight years.
