Penn State Stops Purdue 26-9 at Rec Hall

A Matt Brown fall and Morgan McIntosh technical fall helped the Lions to victory in front of 6,342.

Penn State completed a weekend Big Ten sweep Sunday at Rec Hall. Matt Brown and Morgan McIntosh were a big reason why.

Brown recorded a pin at 174 pounds, and McIntosh a 21-6 technical fall at 197, to lift Penn State to a 26-9 victory over visiting Purdue at Rec Hall.

"I thought that was big," Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson said of Brown's fall.

It was timely, as something had to wake up a sellout crowd lulled by six matches that featured one entertaining bout -- Garrett Hammond's 16-11 win at 165 -- and a feisty Purdue side that struck early and often on the way to a 9-6 lead at halftime before Hammond's win pulled Penn State even.

The Lions (8-1, 4-1) wouldn't trail again, because Brown caught Purdue's Chad Welch in a headlock, rode him to his back, and clinched a fall in 1:12.

"You heard the crowd," Sanderson said. "It was huge. They were in the lead, and Matt, just kind of getting the fall; you have to love Rec Hall. It’s a competitors dream. It doesn’t get any better than that, and Matt took advantage of that and had some fun."

Jordan Conaway (125 pounds), Zach Beitz (149), Matt McCutcheon (184), and Jimmy Lawson (heavyweight) also recorded victories. Penn State was upset, however, at both 133 and 157. Jimmy Gulibon looked unfocused -- something Sanderson noted afterward -- in a 6-0 loss to No. 20 Danny Sabattello at 133, while Dylan Alton fell 3-1 in sudden victory to Doug Welch at 157.

Alton was helped to the locker room by trainers, but Sanderson said he will be fine.

"He had a little something, but he’s fine," Sanderson said. "I don’t think he’s injured. It was an injury where, it could be fixed. Something was out of place, now it’s in place."
