Brown Wins National Title

Matt Brown earns Penn State's 23rd individual national wrestling championship a on Saturday night in St. Louis.

Matt Brown (No. 2) became Penn State wrestling's 23rd individual national champion on Saturday evening when he defeated Pitt's Tyler Wilps (No. 8) in the 174-pound title match.

Brown managed a 5-4 victory as the only one of Penn State’s seven qualifiers to advance to the finals after four years of domination by the Nittany Lion program.

After two grapplers exchanged escape points, Brown got takedown. After an escape by Wilps Brown led 3-2. After grabbing a takedown of his own, Wilps led 4-3 with only 20 seconds to go. Then trying to hold on, Wilps received his second stalling call late in the match to tie up the score.

With three seconds remaining and on top, Wilps was called for locking hands which gave Brown the point for the victory.

The win over Wilps was nothing new for Brown after defeating him last season and beating him earlier this season, 6-5.

Brown was already a three-time All-American and a two-time national finalist before tonight's national title victory.
