Insight On PSU Rookie LB Jake Cooper

The Nittany Lion staff burned his redshirt after two key injuries at middle linebacker in the Temple game. After seeing him play often in high school, we fill you in on his skills.

During the course of Penn State’s 27-10 loss at Temple Saturday, true freshman Jake Cooper went from redshirting to handling the most important spot on the defense.

A season-ending knee injury to starting middle linebacker Nyeem Wartman-White and then an injury to top backup Gary Wooten prompted James Franklin’s staff to burn Cooper’s redshirt.

On the depth chart for this week’s home-opener vs. Buffalo, the 6-foot-1, 226-pound Cooper is now listed as the second-teamer behind Wooten. But it is anyone’s guess who will actually start at the position, as Wooten struggled in the loss to the Owls.

We covered Cooper extensively during his career at Archbishop Wood near Philadelphia. Here is a scouting report.
