Penn State running back Akeel Lynch had a little extra motivation during what would become a career-long 75-yard run against Rutgers Saturday.
If he didn't make it into the end zone, he knew the coaching staff would take into account how far he had run and replace him with rookie Saquon Barkley.
"I didn't want to have a 70-yard run and then Saquon goes in and gets a 5-yard touchdown,” Lynch said with a smile.
For the record, Lynch scored on the 75-yard bolt. He finished with 120 yards and then one TD on 10 carries.
Barkley, meanwhile, carried 21 times for 195 yards and two scores. And nobody has been more supportive of the rookie than the starter.
"The kid's gifted,” Lynch said. "There's no doubt about it.”
