FOS FEARLESS FORECAST: Penn State-Ohio State

FightOnState.com's crack staff chimes in with game picks for the Nittany Lions' showdown with the No. 1 Buckeyes in Columbus. Former PSU tackle Keith "Goon" Conlin chimes in via video.

Penn State (5-1) faces it first true road test of the season Saturday. And what a test it should be, as the Nittany Lions travel to Columbus to take on undefeated and No. 1 Ohio State in an 8 p.m. kick.

FightOnState.com's staff and key friends offer their game and season predictions. Is anyone crazy enough to pick PSU, which is more than a two-touchdown underdog?

Included above is a video prediciton from former Nittany Lion Keith "Goon" Conlin of Lettermans.

Comment: Look for the Penn State defense to keep this close for a while. But Ohio State simply has too much across-the-board talent. Given what happened in Beaver Stadium last year (not to mention against some lesser opponents this season), there is no way the Buckeyes are caught taking the Nittany Lions lightly.

Prediction: Ohio State 24, Penn State 13

Scott Cole (PSU96)

Comment: Penn State fed off the White Out crowd last year to hang with the eventual national champions. Now, the Lions will see what a Black Out crowd can do for the Buckeyes. They will have to weather the emotional storm in the first quarter and execute the most balanced, creative offensive game plan thus far to stay in the game. The Lion defense is too good to allow this game to get away completely, but I see the Buckeyes jumping out to a comfortable early lead and cruising to victory.

Prediction: Ohio State 27, Penn State 10

Keith Conlin (keithconlin)

Comment: Penn State has got to keep the score down to have any chance in this game. Can’t get into a shootout with the Buckeyes. I’m expecting a low-scoring game and The Toe coming through to win it. Side note

OSU has allowed a lot of points to lesser teams. It will be very interesting to see how the Buckeyes react if PSU can come out and put some points on the board and stifle their offense. They can outscore most, but it will be interesting to see how they do vs. our defense. Should be fun.

Prediction: Penn State 17, Ohio State 14

Nirav Dalal (PlaybookNirav)

Comment: Ohio State has not looked very good this year. If this game was in Happy Valley, I would be tempted to pick Penn State. But the home crowd at night will give the Buckeyes some juice. A late Ezekiel Elliott long run will seal the deal.

Prediction: Ohio State 24, Penn State 17

Mark Harrington (PlaybookMark)

Comment: OSU has by no means looked like a No. 1 team to this point. If Penn State can create opportunities on defense and capitalize on offense, I think it has a chance to shock the college football world. While I am a believer that the defense can create disruption for OSU, I am not sold that the offense can capitalize enough to grab this one.

Prediction: Ohio State 27, Penn State 20

Tom Hoffman (underscoreTom)

Comment: Penn State had a little bit of new-found offense vs. Indiana and was able to move the ball without Barkley in the game. Ohio State really hasn’t played to its No. 1 ranking yet, generally struggling in every game. That said, The Shoe isn’t friendly to anyone and this by far will be the biggest test for PSU’s patchwork offensive line.

Prediction: Ohio State 21, Penn State 10

Tom McLaughlin (WeRPSUPlaybook)

Comment: Penn State exposed an Indiana team that rode emotion the previous week to play the Buckeyes close. Ohio State won’t look past the Lions, and this will not be a friendly home crowd for the Blue and White. If the Lions can keep their heads and not let the game get out of hand early, it could be respectable. But it could also be a Black Out blowout.

Prediction: Ohio State 35, Penn State 13

Donovan Neal (PSUMtnBike)

Comment: Ohio State > Indiana; Penn State >> Indiana; therefore Penn State > Ohio State. Right? No, matchups don’t work that way, and the deep, talented Buckeyes in Prime Time at home will be too much for the young, mistake-prone Lions.

This game will get out of hand (barring a colossal home team meltdown).

Prediction: Ohio State 38, Penn State 13

Rob Riva (rriva)

Comment: Ohio State hasn’t looked like the No. 1 team in the country so far this year. But there are some individual match-ups that are concerning. If Saquan Barkley plays, perhaps Penn State can keep is close. But the Nittany Lions will likely be playing from behind early.

Prediction: Ohio State 42, Penn State 6
