COLUMBUS, Ohio — Our report card from Penn State’s 38-10 loss to Ohio State here.
OVERALL: We actually saw some flashes of what the Lions can be against a powerhouse team. Alas, we also saw why OSU is a powerhouse team right now and PSU is not.
OFFENSE: Yes, Saquon Barkley was terrific and the O-line looked good in run blocking. And Chris Godwin continues to impress (see above). But there were too many blown opportunities and mistakes.
DEFENSE: Again, there were some terrific things. But we get the sense that if J.T. Barrett had played the entire game for the Buckeyes, things could have gotten really ugly.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Not sure we’ve ever seen so stark a difference between one team’s punt team and the other’s. OSU’s Cameron Johnston controlled field position. PSU’s punters gave it away.
COACHING: The Lions were ready for the bright lights. They just could not sustain anything.
INTANGIBLES: Nobody stepped up to make the REALLY big play that could have swung things Penn State’s way.
OTHER GUY: This is probably as well as Ohio State has played all season. But we still get the sense the Buckeyes don’t quite have it all together.
OFFICIALS: Another PSU-OSU game, another blown replay call.
CROWD: The Black Out crowd was good. But it didn’t really rattle the Lions outside of one bad snap.
