Our report card from Penn State’s 39-0 beating of Illinois.
OVERALL: This game was far from perfect, but the results speak for themselves. Nice job by most from PSU’s perspective.
OFFENSE: Christian Hackenberg and company again took what an opponent was giving. And they kept right on taking to blow it open.
DEFENSE: Illinois never got past the PSU 33, and its deepest drive ended at the PSU 40 (thanks to yardage lost on a fumble).
SPECIAL TEAMS: The good (especially Koa Farmer’s kickoff return) was more than offset by the bad (two missed PATs, two kickoffs out of bounds, a muffed punt).
COACHING: Aside from the special teams’ issues — which were not a factor in the outcome Saturday — good work on both sides of the ball.
INTANGIBLES: Penn State definitely had its mojo going in this one.
OTHER GUY: Boy, did Tim Beckman do a number on this program. Almost feel bad for the Illini now that he’s gone.
OFFICIALS: Give ‘em credit for keeping things moving in the second half.
CROWD: So much for coming 107,000 strong every game. Two straight road trips prior to this one, then a road game and open date after it, and that’s all the folks who bothered to show up?
