EAST LANSING, Mich. — Our report card from Penn State’s 55-16 pounding at No. 5 Michigan State.
OVERALL: There were some positives in this game. But 55-16 is 55-16. No other way to paint it than a failing effort.
OFFENSE: PSU actually moved the ball fairly well vs. a very good defense. However, you have to get more than 16 points out of 418 yards of total offense.
DEFENSE: This is the worst effort we’ve seen from Bob Shoop’s unit. Injuries to several starters do not explain more poor tackling, no pressure on the QB and then rolling over at the end.
SPECIAL TEAMS: We can see this becoming a drinking game. Whoever had a fumbled kickoff return leading to a short-field MSU score, chug please.
COACHING: Penn State looked neither well-coached nor prepared. It will be interesting to see what — if any — staff changes are made in the offseason.
INTANGIBLES: Even when PSU cut it to 20-10, you had the feeling the Spartans could drop the hammer at any moment.
OTHER GUY: That’s the best team the Lions have faced all year. Northwestern and Michigan are Top 25 pretenders in our view. Not this group.
OFFICIALS: Seemed like a pretty good day for the zebras.
CROWD: A late-arriving crowd for a 3:30 p.m. kick on Senior Day?
