Penn State freshman running back Saquon Barkley began the 2015 regular season with one carry for one yard in the Nittany Lions’ opening loss at Temple. He ended it with a PSU rookie record 1,070 rushing yards, 1,155 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns.
Tuesday, he was honored for that effort by being named second-team All-Big Ten by the conference media and coaches. He becomes the first PSU freshman running back to win first- or second-team All-Big Ten laurels since the Lions joined the conference in 1993.
The conference offensive honors were announced Tuesday, and other Lions who received nods included:
• WR Chris Godwin (a sophomore) was named second team by the media and third team by the coaches.
• WR DaeSean Hamilton (a redshirt freshman) received honorable-mention notice from the media.
On Monday, DE Carl Nassib was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Also Monday, DT Austin Johnson was named second team by the media and third team by the coaches. Fellow DT Anthony Zettel was named third team by the media and coaches.
Honorable-mention picks included S Marcus Allen (M,C), LB Jason Cabinda (M,C), CB Trevor Williams (C) and CB Grant Haley (M).
