Count Penn State’s Pat Chambers among those who were not surprised when Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan decided to retire earlier this week. But count him firmly among those who support the reasoning behind the timing of Ryan’s retirement.
By stepping down in the middle of the season, Ryan basically assured that his longtime assistant — Greg Gard — would be named interim head coach through the end of the campaign. And that’s exactly what happened.
Chambers and Ryan are both natives of the Philadelphia area, and as such are something of kindred spirits. In fact, Chambers said Ryan would often give him advice, even though they both worked in the Big Ten.
Of course, Chambers also noted that Ryan could afford to be magnanimous, as the Badgers have won all seven games between the two teams since Chambers took the helm of the Nittany Lions.
