Penn State's Nolf Pulls Off Stunning Upset

Cael Sanderson's standout freshman stunned the wrestling world by pinning undefeated defending national champ Isaiah Martinez of Illinois.

Standout Penn State freshman 157-pounder Jason Nolf faced his biggest challenge of the season Saturday, taking on Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez in Champaign.

Martinez’s resume?

The sophomore entered the match ranked No. 1 nationally at 157 with a perfect 20-0 record. He is the defending national champion. He had never lost a collegiate match.

Though Nolf was ranked No. 3, most figured he’d have his hands full with one of the nation’s most dominant wrestlers. But it turned out to be the other way around.

After a 3-3 first period, Nolf used an escape to take a 4-3 lead. A second stall call on Martinez made it 5-3.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Nolf planted Martinez on his back, adjusted, and stunned Huff Hall and the wrestling world by pinning Martinez.

Nolf is now 21-0 on the season and figures to climb to No. 1 the next time the rankings are released. He attributed to the victory to being in top condition.

“My gas tank is better,” Nold told BTN. “I expected to get the win here.”
