Juco DE Thrift Pops Commitment To PSU

The Nittany Lions landed a late commitment to their Class of 2016 from a player who has a long history with assistant Terry Smith.

Brenon Thrift has had a long relationship with Penn State assistant coach @Terry Smith.

When Smith was the head coach at Gateway High in Monroeville, Pa., Thrift played under him for two season. When Smith moved on to become an assistant coach at Temple for the 2013 season, he was the primary recruiting contract for Thrift and convinced the defensive lineman to commit to the Owls.

Now Smith is the assistant head coach and defensive recruiting coordinator for the Nittany Lions, and he is recruiting Thrift again. Thrift left Temple after redshirting as a true freshman in 2014 for Lackawanna Community College in Scranton, Pa.

And Wednesday, the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder made a surprise commitment to Penn State. Thrift did not have an offer as of last weekend but apparently received one recently.

Akron, Arizona, Central Florida, Idaho, Illinois and James Madison were are all showing interest, as well. Thrift will have three seasons of FBS eligibility remaining starting next fall.

Stay tuned for more.
