Penn State has added some much-needed post help in the form of Virginia Tech transfer Satchel Pierce. Unfortunately for Pat Chambers’ squad, the 7-foot, 250-pounder must sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules before beginning his final two years of eligibility with the Nittany Lions.
Pierce announced the transfer via Twitter. PSU has yet to officially release the info.
Pierce is a nice add for a team that loses 7-0 Jordan Dickerson and 6-9 Donovon Jack to graduation. State also loses swing forward Brandon Taylor, who led the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game last winter.
The only true post player with experience returning for next season is Julian Moore. Even with promising freshman Mike Watkins coming out of a redshirt, the Lions will be lacking for size in the paint.
If nothing else, Pierce will be helpful in practice next season before he finally is able to hit the floor in 2017-18.
As a sophomore last season, Pierce’s role with the Hokies was reduced. He averaged 1.6 points, 1.3 rebound and 6.2 minutes.
However, as a true freshman in 2014-15, he logged 13.8 minutes per outing (3.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg). His 23 blocks led the team. In a loss to PSU at the Jordan Center, he played eight minutes, logging two points, a rebound and a block.
