Virginia three-star offensive lineman Mekhi Becton announced via Twitter Friday that he had received an offer from Penn State. Though the 6-foot-7, 300-pounder is being strongly pursued by the likes of Michigan State and Maryland, he said the Nittany Lions’ offer came out of the blue.
"I was surprised when Penn State offered me,” Becton said. “Coach (Matt) Limegrover offered me. I really wasn't expecting an offer from PSU, since we've only been in contact for about three months now."
Becton currently doesn't know much about Penn State. But he is starting to check into the new O-line coach Limegrover’s style and the offense of new coordinator Joe Moorhead. And that’s just the start of the research.
"I will be visiting Penn State this summer,” he explained. “I haven't set a date yet in stone. I also will visit some other schools, but I’m not sure who right now."
At this time in his recruitment, he said Georgia, LSU, Virginia, Pitt and Penn State are recruiting him the hardest. He also said he hopes to have a top 10 by August and that he intends to make his decision shortly before Signing Day.
Loney’s Take: Penn State has some ground to make up for Becton. A lot will be riding on the summer visit because some other heavy hitters are involved.
