FOS Fearless Forecast: Penn State vs. Kent State

The FightOnState.com staff and a few friends give their predictions on how this week's season-opener at Beaver Stadium will go.

Nirav Dalal (PlaybookNirav)

COMMENT: This is a good matchup for Penn State right out of the chute. Kent State's defense was very good last year and will be good this year. PSU wins, but I don't see this being a blowout.

PREDICTION: Penn State 24, Kent State 6

Scott Cole (PSU96)

COMMENT: I expect Penn State to keep the passing game under wraps for the most part against the Golden Flashes. It will be run right, run left and run middle with the Lions' talented stable of backs racking up big yardage.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Kent State 9

COMMENT: Kent State will come out hard to stop Barkley, thereby freeing up McSorley to have a big game. Barkley will get his yards, but I'm predicting an MVP game from either McSorley or a receiver.

PREDICTION: Penn State 38, Kent State 13

Mark Harrington (PlaybookMark)

COMMENT: It'll be interesting to see how McSorely takes the reigns with a retooled line. Yet with talent in the backfield and across the receiving unit, he should have enough support to get comfortable and open things up.

PREDICTION: Penn State 24, Kent State 12

Rob Riva (rriva)

COMMENT: Despite the returning starters on both sides of the ball for Kent State, Penn State should still be able to win the game handily. The opener will be a success for the Nittany Lions if the game is in hand by the end of the third quarter and the defense doesn't get dinged up.

PREDICTION: Penn State 48, Kent State 17

Keith "Goon" Conlin (KeithConlin)

COMMENT: The PSU offense dominates from start to finish. The horses will wear down Kent State as the game goes on. Penn State's offense of the future is here now. I'm really looking forward to this season.

PREDICTION: Penn State 38, Kent State 14

Tom Hoffman (underscoreTom)

COMMENT: Kent State returns more experience than any team in the nation. However, the returning defense, despite being one of the better units statistically in 2015, allowed nearly 33 points per game to teams that finished with a winning record. Penn State's new offensive wings should be able to fly around the field and get its green defensive line some experience.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Kent State 6

Scott Neal (PSUMtnBike)

COMMENT: Can the offensive and defensive lines be strong enough to showcase all the talent around them this year? Week 1 will potentially provide that insight.

PREDICTION: Penn State 38, Kent State 17

Tom McLaughlin (WeRPSUPlaybook)

COMMENT: The Golden Flashes should provide just the cannon fodder a fresh Lion quarterback needs as he steps onto the field in front of the home crowd. On paper, this game should not be much of a matchup at all, but it is being played on grass. It won't matter. The talent gap is big enough that the Lions will roll before letting up on the gas after halftime.

PREDICTION: Penn State 35, Kent State 10

Mark Brennan (MarkBrennan)

COMMENT: Expect to see SOME fun new stuff from the Nittany Lions’ offense, with a few things being held in reserve for that outfit PSU faces in Week 2. A significant edge in team speed will allow the Lions to blow this open in the second half.

PREDICTION: Penn State 34, Kent State 10

COMMENT: The offense comes out firing on all cylinders. Making a great first impression is critical for confidence across the board — team, fan base and administration. Barkley runs wild, McSorley proves he is the real deal and special teams make a statement that the past two years are not going to be the norm going forward. We tell Pitt here we come — get ready!

PREDICTION: Penn State 45, Kent State 0
