Penn State sophomore running back Saquon Barkley and and junior linebacker Brandon Smith have been honored as the Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their standout performances over the Maryland Terrapins.
Barkley served as the foundation for Penn State's offensive attack with 202 rushing yards and 31 carries, each carrier highs for him. This was his first 200-yard rushing effort and his seventh 100-yard rushing game of his career.
Smith also had a career day with 14 tackles against the Terrapins. Smith grabbed the first interception of his career, too.
This is the second consecutive week Penn State players have won Defensive Player of the Week in the conference as junior safety Marcus Allen grabbed the honor for his strong performance in the overtime win over Minnesota.
The last time the Nittany Lions had both the Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week was in 2009, when Daryll Clark and NaVorro Bowman won the awards following the Michigan State game.
