FOS Fearless Forecast: Penn State vs. Purdue

How will our esteemed panel rebound after a collective O-fer last week? Check the predictions.

Nirav Dalal (PlaybookNirav)

COMMENT: According to my formula ... noon kickoff + struggling opponent + road game in sleepy Ross-Ade Stadium = very slow start. I think this game will be uncomfortably close and sloppy in the first half, with the Lions finally pulling away in the fourth quarter..

PREDICTION: Penn State 24, Purdue 10

Scott Cole (PSU96)

COMMENT: The biggest challenge this week is turning the page, and bringing the same focus and intensity to a noon road game at Purdue in front of a two-thirds full stadium against an opponent that Penn State absolutely should beat. I think the Lions will have a sluggish start, but do just enough to keep the momentum going in the right direction.

PREDICTION: Penn State 27, Purdue 17

COMMENT: PSU gets off to a slow start but controls the game nonetheless. A big day from Barkley leads the way and the defense does enough for the win.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Purdue 24

Mark Harrington (PlaybookMark)

COMMENT: While a lot will be made about this being a "trap" game, I think the coaches will have the PSU players focused on the opportunity at hand. That's not to say the team — and particularly the offense — won't have stumbles. But I expect the defense and special teams to keep things steady even if the offense has a slow start.

PREDICTION: Penn State 35, Purdue 16

Rob Riva (rriva)

COMMENT: Penn State has been trending up in its play on both sides of the ball, and needs to avoid a letdown against a Purdue team without a permanent head coach.

PREDICTION: Penn State 28, Purdue 17

Keith "Goon" Conlin (KeithConlin)

COMMENT: In what is starting to take on a life of its own, I once again need to be proven wrong by PSU. Great game last week. One for the ages. Young team, small crowd and early game scare the heck out of me coming off such a high as last week. Could be scary, but I think JF will not let it happen. Gotta have these types of games. EDITOR'S NOTE: The Lions have won three straight with Goon picking against them, so he refuses to mess with his reverse magic.

PREDICTION: Purdue 27, Penn State 17

Tom Hoffman (underscoreTom)

COMMENT: This game is your quintessential letdown game scenario: coming off a big win, heading on the road for an early kickoff in an empty stadium against a team without a head coach. But I think Penn State has its focus where it needs to be and Purdue will serve to get the offense back on track.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Purdue 10

Scott Neal (PSUMtnBike)

COMMENT: The Lions have been improving each week and took a huge leap forward last Saturday. This week presents an early road game with a Purdue squad that has played respectably in its last two losses (Iowa and Nebraska). I think Franklin will have the players focused and ready to play.

PREDICTION: Penn State 34, Purdue 17

Tom McLaughlin (WeRPSUPlaybook)

COMMENT: I'm eating crow this week, but the Nittany Lions showed me something on Saturday. The favorable schedule allows for the possibility of winning out, and momentum factors big in college football. This week James Franklin and company face a different kind of test — avoiding a letdown after a big emotional win. It's a road game, and Penn State is historically sluggish in noon starts. This one will be closer than it should be, but this team has found its soul, and should come away with the victory.

PREDICTION: Penn State 27, Purdue 17

Mark Brennan (MarkBrennan)

COMMENT: A Maryland outfit that has scored a TOTAL of 52 points in its three other B1G games went off for 50 vs. the Boilermakers. The Nittany Lions are just too athletic on both sides of the ball. Now that they’re getting healthy, I think they roll this week.

PREDICTION: Penn State 38, Purdue 14

COMMENT: Some are concerned about a letdown after the huge upset of Ohio State. Me? Nah. This is a different team. The Lions have been on a mission since beating Minnesota in OT with all of the injuries they've had to overcome. As "James" preaches — 1 and 0 this week, and these guys realize that 1 and 0 over the next five weeks makes them nationally relevant again and sets the table for a huge 2017 campaign. This team comes out and shows it is ready for the challenge ahead. Barkley runs wild and the D comes up big.

PREDICTION: Penn State 45, Purdue 17

OPENING LINE: Penn State -10.5 (Over/Under 59)

LINE AT PRESS TIME: Penn State -14 (Over/Under 57)

AVERAGE PREDICTION: Penn State 27.8, Purdue 15.1

PENN STATE (10): Everyone except Goon

PURDUE (1): Goon
