FOS Fearless Forecast: Penn State vs. Michigan State

The FOS staff and friends give their prognostications for the Nittany Lions' Land Grant Trophy game vs. the Spartans.

Nirav Dalal (PlaybookNirav)

COMMENT: Michigan State's offense is gaining confidence and is starting to develop an identity running the ball. So I think this will be a close game at halftime, with Penn State — yet again — taking control in the second half.

PREDICTION: Penn State 35, Michigan State 17

Scott Cole (PSU96)

COMMENT: Michigan State is not your typical 3-8 team. It had a number of leftovers from the Spartans' 2015 playoff run, but lacks a QB who can make plays to win a close game in the fourth quarter. Penn State has one of those guys in Trace McSorley, and he will be the difference on Senior Day.

PREDICTION: Penn State 30, Michigan State 20

fp001

COMMENT: PSU plays a good game but struggles to get the offense going throughout. The Nittany Lion defense rises to the occasion to help secure a win.

PREDICTION: Penn State 28, Michigan State 24

Mark Harrington (PlaybookMark)

COMMENT: What a way to end the season. While the Spartans aren't playing for much, they have an emerging run game and a renewed confidence after taking Ohio State down to the wire. With so much on the line for the Lions, I expect the staff will have the players focused with a defense that will step up and create opportunities to help the offense find its rhythm.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Michigan State 16

Rob Riva (rriva)

COMMENT: Who would have thought the young, still sanction-riddled 2016 football team would be in the position for a berth to represent the B1G East in the conference championship heading into its matchup with Sparty? Not me. Penn State found itself in a similar situation in 2005 and 2008, with Michigan State standing between the Nittany Lions and championship status. For that, we will keep the tradition alive.

PREDICTION: Michigan State 24, Penn State 23

Keith "Goon" Conlin (KeithConlin)

COMMENT: One more time boys. Keep it going. I predict Sparty will come out to ruin our season and will be playing their bowl game. We better be ready or it could be ugly. I think Franklin will have the troops prepped and ready to go. Get ’em to Indy! Either way, a great, great season.EDITOR'S NOTE: The Lions have won seven straight with Goon picking against them, so he refuses to mess with his reverse magic.

PREDICTION: Michigan State 27, Penn State 10

Tom Hoffman (underscoreTom)

COMMENT: There are so many side stories to this 3:30 p.m. game, and one of them starts at noon. With those in mind, there are several areas of motivation (and de-motivation) for both teams. Regardless of what happens in Columbus in the early game, I think the worn out Spartans give Penn State a battle, but the Lions come away with the win in closer-than-the-score-indicates fashion.

PREDICTION: Penn State 28, Michigan State 13

Scott Neal (PSUMtnBike)

COMMENT: Don't be fooled by the Spartans' record. Just as they were a few plays from losing several games last year, they're only a few plays and a QB from winning more games this year. They have the talent to beat Penn State, but how will they respond on the road with their season already defined? If Penn State comes out strong, it could break the Spartans' will and win comfortably. But if the young Lions stutter out of the gate, this one could be a close, grind-it out-game until the end.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Michigan State 20

Tom McLaughlin (WeRPSUPlaybook)

COMMENT: Michigan State has played some teams tough this season, and at other times has looked like Rutgers on a bad day. The Lions have had Sparty's number over the years, seemingly finding answers even when they didn't appear to be possible. Regardless, the Spartans would love to play spoiler to Penn State's Cinderella winning streak. I don't see them doing it in the friendly confines of a cold, inhospitable Beaver Stadium.

PREDICTION: Penn State 35, Michigan State 31

Mark Brennan (MarkBrennan)

COMMENT: Remember Jack Allen? Well, you better believe the Nittany Lions do. He was the offensive lineman who scored a fourth-quarter rushing TD vs. PSU in Sparty’s 55-16 blowout win in East Lansing last season. James Franklin is too classy to reciprocate in kind. But that play and some of the nonsense that went on in the summer will only serve to further motivate an already driven bunch of Nittany Lions. The Land Grant Trophy returns to Happy Valley.

PREDICTION: Penn State 31, Michigan State 13

Ed001

COMMENT: By 3:30 p.m. Saturday, James Franklin’s Lions will know if they are playing for a spot in the Big Ten championship game or playing to finish 10-2 while extending their winning streak to eight games and gaining a New Year’s Six bowl birth. Some fans are concerned about a letdown if Michigan beats Ohio State, but Franklin’s even keel approach of one game at a time and 1-0 this week has kept his team focused throughout the year, especially during this winning streak. MSU played OSU tough last week In East Lansing. However, as we have come to learn this year especially, winning on the road in the Big Ten is not easy. MSU’s last two road trips have resulted in 28-17 and 31-27 losses at Maryland and Illinois, respectively. A late-afternoon game at Beaver Stadium will be too much for the Spartans to handle. PSU jumps out early and puts it away in the second half behind McSorley, Barkley and Godwin. Brent Pry’s D packs it in, daring MSU to beat PSU over the top. The Lions’ D is up to the challenge!

PREDICTION: Penn State 34, Michigan State 17

Recap

OPENING LINE: Penn State -13.5 (Over/Under 54.5)

LINE AT PRESS TIME: Penn State -12.5 (Over/Under 54)

AVERAGE PREDICTION: Penn State 28.7, Michigan State 20.8
