The post-season honors have been rolling in for the Nittany Lions, for both the coaches and the players. Now Penn State has two freshmen who were each named to Freshman All-American teams from two different media outlets.
Offensive lineman Ryan Bates was named to USA Today's Freshman All-American team. The redshirt freshman offensive guard started all 13 games for Penn State this season and was instrumental in blocking for one of the most potent offenses in the Big Ten, which featured the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, Saquon Barkley and th Big Ten's top passer, Trace McSorley who passed for 3,360 yards.
Punter Blake Gillikin was named to ESPN's True Freshman All-American team. The true freshman punter handled the vast bulk of punting duties all season for the Lions. He had 56 punts for a total of 2,357 yards with 21 of those kicks downed inside the 20. His long was 69 yards. Gillikin averaged 42.1 yards per punt this season which was the third best rate in the Big Ten.
