FOS Takeaways: Another Gut-Punch Loss For Penn State

Our view of things as the Nittany Lions allowed one more tight game to slip away at the Jordan Center.

Penn State (14-16, 6-11) dropped another heartbreaker at the Jordan Center Tuesday night, this time a 71-70 setback to Ohio State (16-14, 7-10).

Here is our take on things:

SO CLOSE, YET…

It is one thing to lose a gut-punch game here and there. It happens to everyone.

For the Nittany Lions, though, one can only wonder about the cumulative effect of the (figurative) body blows it has absorbed during the Big Ten season. Pat Chambers' team has now lost five conference games by four points or fewer and a sixth in triple overtime. http://www.scout.com/college/penn-state/story/1758472-2019-olb-smith-has...

Not long after Buckeye Jae’Sean Tate banked in the game-winner Wednesday, Chambers and a couple of his players — as they always do — faced the music in the Media Room.

Junior guard Shep Garner had clearly been crying. When Chambers arrived a short while later, his eyes were red, too. It was difficult to tell if his voice was just hoarse, was cracking from emotion or — most likely — some combination of the two.

They surely realized Penn State was not going to recover from this one, at least not this year. At two games below .500 with only one regular-season game remaining, the young Nittany Lions have their work cut out for them and then some if they hope to reach the NIT for the first time in Chambers’ six-year tenure (more on this later).

Long term, though, Chambers believes battle scars earned in 2016-17 will pay off.

“It hurts, and that’s a good thing,” Chamber said. “That’s a good thing for this program. That’s a good thing for the fans out there that these guys care this much. You know what they’re not doing? They’re not planning a spring break, I can tell you that. We have winners in that locker room who are invested, who want to get better, and they want to see this thing turn.”

Record-wise, at least, it just ain’t going to happen this year.

The odds of matching last season’s 16-16 mark — let alone reaching the .500-plus mark that could get them into the NIT — are just too long.

NIT NOT IN THE CARDS

Contrary to popular belief, there is no longer a hard-and-fast rule requiring teams to be above .500 to earn an NIT bid. But in the tournament’s current format, no sub-.500 team has ever made it. In fact, since 2010, only one .500 team has made it (traditional power North Carolina in 2010). http://www.scout.com/college/penn-state/story/1758658-watch-emotional-ch...

So you can see the dilemma Penn State is in now.

Even with a win in the regular season finale at Iowa Sunday (which would be an upset), the Lions will enter next week’s Big Ten Tournament at 15-16 overall.

To finish above .500, they would have to win three games in three days.

We’ve seen this season that Penn State has the ability to beat anyone in the Big Ten on a given day.

But that is a far cry from beating three teams — no matter how good or bad — in three days for a program whose three best players are freshmen.

TOUGH BOUNCE? NOT QUITE

Harvey Levine/FOS

Penn State has had some bad bounces go against it this year. But that was not the case Wednesday.

Tate made a difficult shot to win it, lofting it over Lions Lamar Stevens and Julian Moore. Garner said his team defended the play well.

But a review of the action says otherwise.

Check out the photo above. Had Tate missed the shot, Buckeye Trevor Thompson was in prime position to tap it in or follow with a slam.

Moore had rotated over to help Stevens. And nobody dipped into the lane to account for Moore’s man.

The Lions were clearly hurt on the play by the fact that their two best defenders were out of the game.

Mike Watkins, the Big Ten’s second-leading shot-blocker, had to leave due to leg cramps. Josh Reaves, the top steals man in the B1G, fouled out with more than six minutes remaining.

BANKS CLOSED

Penn State junior forward Payton Banks missed the game due to an undisclosed illness. It marked the first time this season the Nittany Lions’ sixth man did not suit up.

Redshirt sophomore Isaiah Washington gobbled up most of Banks’ minutes (a season-high 22). He finished with five points (on 1-of-4 shooting) and one rebound.

CARR SHINES AGAIN

Harvey Levine/FOS

We probably should not have taken this long to mention another unreal performance by Penn State rookie point guard Tony Carr.

His 3-point bomb with 11 seconds remaining gave the Lions a short-lived 70-69 lead and was just the latest clutch shot in a season that’s been full of them for the Philadelphia native.

Carr scored eight points in the final 5:11 of the game. And they just so happened to be eight of Penn State’s final 10 points. He finished with game highs of 21 points and 38 minutes, to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

SHEP HOT & COLD

Garner was terrific through the first 26 minutes of the game. With 14:11 remaining in the second half, he had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He was 5 of 10 from the arc.

He finished with 20 points, and missed his final four shots — all of them 3-pointers. His last point came on a free throw with 12:32 remaining.

To his credit, when the game was on the line, he did a great job of coming off a high ball screen and throwing a pass back against the grain for Carr’s big triple.

BOX SCORE

LAYING IT ON THE LINE

The line for this game opened at Penn State -3 (145 o/u) and closed with the Nittany Lions -1.5 (144 o/u).

So even had OSU not won the game in the final seconds, it still would have covered.

The under turned out to be safe after both teams cooled offensively in the second half.

NEXT UP

Penn State wraps the regular season with a 1 p.m. tip at Iowa Sunday. BTN is carrying the game.

The Hawkeyes are 16-13 and 8-8 heading into Thursday’s game at No. 22 Wisconsin. This will be the first game between the Lions and Iowa this year.

Our guess is that the Hawkeyes will be favored by about eight in the game.
