The Penn State men's lacrosse team moved to 7-0 on the season thanks to a 15-12 victory over a previously undefeated Harvard team in Cambridge, Massachusetts this weekend. The win not only gives the Nittany Lion program its best start in program history, but also advances the squad to the top spot in US Lacrosse Magazine's national collegiate poll where PSU was previously ranked No. 3. The Lions are ranked No. 3 by Inside Lacrosse behind No. 1 Denver and No. 2 Notre Dame, which met this weekend with Denver topping the Irish 11-10.
Penn State leads the US Lacrosse Magazine rankings that include five other Big Ten lacrosse conference teams in the top 20, No. 4 Maryland, No. 5 Rutgers, No. 13 Johns Hopkins, No. 15 Michigan and No. 18 Ohio State. The Nittany Lions will face each of these teams in April; No. 18 Ohio State (4/2 - home), No. 4 Maryland (4/8 - away), No. 13 Johns Hopkins (4/15 - away) and No. 5 Rutgers (4/23 - home) and No. 15 Michigan (4/29 - away).
Against Harvard this past Saturday senior midfield Matt Florence and freshman attackman Mac O’Keefe set the pace for Penn State's offense as each posted a hat-trick for a combined six goals. Although PSU was outshot 40-37 and had seven more turnovers than Harvard, the Lions dominated on faceoffs with a 23-8 edge.
Here's how the Nittany Lions' regular season has resulted so far:
2/4 Robert Morris: W 15-11
2/11 @Hobart: W 21-15
2/18 Cornell: W 20-10
2/25 @Villanova: 17-12
3/4 Penn: 14-13
3/7 Furman: 12-10
3/11 @Harvard 15-12
The Nittany Lions return to action on Friday, March 17, as they face Fairfield at home at 4:00 pm.
