PSU's Wartman-White Maintains NFL Dreams

The 24-year-old former Nittany Lion is hoping to take his game to the next level even though he is still recovering from a second ACL injury.

As Penn State’s Pro Day was unfolding Thursday afternoon, Nittany Lions linebacker Nyeem Wartman-White milled about on the field within Holuba Hall. Or he sat off to the side while his former teammates were put through their paces for the NFL scouts.

He was wearing a hoody and sweatpants, the latter concealing the scars he has on each knee as a result of the ACL tears he suffered in the 2015 opener and the third game of the ’16 season — both times on punt plays, both times against Temple, which happens to be his hometown team.

Still mending from the second of those injuries and wearing a heavy brace on his right knee, he was unable to take part in any of the field tests Thursday, but did bench press (19 reps) and do some of the linebacker drills. He had thought he was going to have to sit those out, too, but had been given the go-ahead at the last minute. http://www.scout.com/college/penn-state/story/1763253-watch-psu-wr-chris...

While he was not able to go full-speed, it was something to cling to. If we have learned nothing else during his maddeningly truncated career, it’s that he needs only that to maintain his optimism.

He believes he will be fully healthy by July, shortly before NFL teams open training camp, and fervently hopes that somebody gives him a shot. It is his “childhood dream” to play at the next level, he said, and remains intact despite the setbacks of the last two years, and despite another knee injury, a sprain, in the second game of the 2012 season.

“I can't see myself just giving up,” he said. “It's a pride thing. It's a football thing. I love football. I have too much pride to see myself 20 years from now and think, 'What if I had tried?' It’s better to try than not to.”

His outlook in turn moves everyone else. Always has.

“Nyeem’s a charismatic guy,” fellow ‘backer Brandon Bell said after Thursday’s workout. “He puts a smile on everybody’s face. He’s everybody’s friend. To see him do well is what we all wanted.”

Wartman-White is the youngest of five children born to a woman named Veronica White, and has five siblings on the side of his father, Warren Wartman, as well. Things were not easy as he grew up in Philadelphia. The family moved around a lot, and in 2007 Nyeem’s older brother, Markel White, was shot in the chest when, Veronica said, he was robbed.

“I thought I was going to lose my son,” she said in a ’15 interview.

He recovered, and despite everything her youngest son never lost his way. At one point the family lived within sight of the Eagles’ home stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, and Nyeem swore he would play there one day.

One problem: He didn’t participate in any organized sports at the time. That didn’t happen until he was in eighth grade and the family moved to northeastern Pennsylvania, to the town of Archbald (pop. 7,000), after his stepdad, Kenyatta Jones, took a construction job in that part of the state.

“I know he loves Philadelphia, and our town is very different from that,” George Howanitz, football coach at Valley View, said of Wartman-White two years ago. “We don’t have a lot of minority students, so that was probably a big adjustment for him. But he fit in very well.”

Athletics gave him an easy entrée into his new world. He played basketball in addition to football, and after one of his first practices he was leaving the gym with teammate Brian Lalli.

“Who’s your new assistant coach?” Lalli’s dad asked him as he opened the car door.

“That’s Nyeem,” Lalli said. “He’s 14 years old.”

First day of freshman football practice, Lalli found himself on the business end of a guy growing toward his current dimensions (6-1, 245). He was carrying the ball in an Oklahoma drill when Wartman-White defeated the luckless blocker before him and delivered a crushing blow to Lalli, breaking his wrist.

They were friends regardless, and teammates on a team that won a District 2 championship their senior year (2011) — one that included not only Lalli, who went on to play wide receiver at Colgate, but two other Division I players.

Wartman-White was the plumb, though, and he saw early action at Penn State, sustaining that first knee injury on the opening kickoff at Virginia in 2012. While he could have returned later that season, then-coach Bill O’Brien elected to redshirt him.

He started the next two years, and recorded a career-high 75 tackles as part of a strong defense in 2014. The next year figured to be even better for him. He moved from weakside linebacker to the middle. And the first game would be against Temple in Lincoln Financial Field, the very stadium where he once dreamed of playing.

His season ended when he tore up his left knee on punt coverage in the first quarter of that game — "I literally just said on the sideline, I'm going to have a big year,” he told Mark Wogenrich of The (Allentown) Morning Call before last season — then blew out the right one during a punt return against the Owls at home last season. http://www.scout.com/college/penn-state/story/1763260-penn-state-pro-day...

The latter injury sent ripples through the entire team.

“I love Nyeem,” guard Derek Dowrey said at the time. “I have ever since I met him in recruiting when I was still in high school.

“I personally can’t imagine what he’s going through. But I know if there is somebody who can get through this, get past it, it will be him. I mean, he’s an amazing athlete, an amazing competitor, a great person, a great teammate.

“I just wish him the best. But I know he doesn’t need that. He’s gonna go get it done.”

Wartman-White could have petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year, and he said Thursday he considered it. But then he talked about being amidst all his young, fresh-faced teammates in the linebackers’ meeting room last season.

“At times I sat there and felt like my time was due,” he said. “I want to see them shine. Their time is now. I’m old now.”

He’s 24 — old for the college game, maybe. But still young enough to dream.
