While Penn State athletics has had an impressive year-to-date on the field, leading the conference with six Big Ten Championships (football, field hockey, men's ice hockey, women's soccer, women's track & field and wrestling) and winning the program's 19th NCAA team National Championship over the past 11 years, the Nittany Lions have also had impressive performances in the classroom.
Penn State athletics saw 76 of its student-athletes honored as Academic All-Big Ten selections for the 2016-2017 winter period. This marks the second-best tally in Penn State history, falling just three shy of the record set last winter with 79 honorees.
Although Penn State had third most Academic All-Big Ten picks this time around, the Lions lead all Big Ten schools with the most all-time Academic All-Big Ten selections with 5,730 since joining the conference competition in 1991-1992. Ohio State places second with 5,667 honorees over that same span. This serves as another illustration of how the program is upholding its 'success with honor' mantra.
