In an academic year that has been filled with championship titles, including six from the Big Ten and one NCAA title, Penn State's No. 13 men's volleyball added another as the team swept Saint Francis 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) Saturday night in front of a packed Rec Hall to win the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) title. This marks the 30th time the Nittany Lions have been EIVA champions.
Penn State's dominance in the EIVA conference continued with the Lions winning their 18th tournament title in the past 19 years. Senior Chris Nugent was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament with nine kills in the title game and 24 kills for the tournament.
With the tournament championship Penn State grabbed the automatic big to the NCAA Tournament, representing the EIVA. With a 21-10 season record, Penn State enters the NCAA Championships as the No. 5 seed and will face the No. 4 seed Hawaii (26-5). The play-in match will take place Tuesday, May 2 at 8 pm at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
