How James Franklin's Purdue Rant Helped PSU Women's Hoops Win A Game

The Nittany Lion football coach's dislike for the Boilermakers (and their uniforms) turned into a rallying cry for the Lady Lions before and during a key Big Ten matchup last season.

HAZLETON, Pa. — James Franklin has won 25 football games since taking over as Penn State’s head coach in 2014.

According to PSU women’s basketball coach Coquese Washington, Franklin also gets credit for one of her team’s victories last season.

Speaking during the Penn State Coaches Caravan alumni event here Tuesday morning, Washington recounted a situation in February where she asked Franklin to stop by the Jordan Center to give the Lady Lions a motivational speech. They were set to face Purdue at home the next day.

Washington gave Franklin carte blanche to fire up her team however he wanted.

“The girls, their eyes are locked in, and he’s motivating ’em,” Washington told a gym full of PSU fans. “And he finishes with, ‘Who do you play tomorrow?’ We were like, Purdue.

“And he was like, ‘Purdue? I hate Purdue and their ugly freakin’ uniforms!’ And the team jumps up and they go, ‘We hate their ugly freakin’ uniforms, too!'”

So it was that a rally cry was born.

The Boilermakers (and their ugly uniforms) had beaten the Lady Lions rather easily (64-51) in West Lafayette a month earlier. This time, it was a different story.

The game was tight in the second half when Washington entered a team huddle during a timeout.

“They’re all looking at me, and I have my (play) board,” Washington said. “And the only thing I could think of was, ‘Let’s finish this out. Because we hate Purdue and their ugly freaking uniforms.’”

Penn State went on to win, 79-73.

“That was James’ win,” Washington said.

Of course, it is much funnier to SEE her tell the story. Check it out in the video above.
