LionNews caught up with Cheltenham head football coach Joe Groh last week to talk about RB/CB prospect Deron Barrett.
Deron is a 5-10 180lbs running back who ran the ball 178 times for 1575 yards and 24 TD's in 2003, but he's probably looking at playing cornerback in college. Barret had 5 interceptions at safety last year, but as Coach Groh tells it, "Deron was too valuable to waste as a cornerback at this level. Most of the teams we play run the ball most of the time. Plus, if you put a kid like Barrett at safety he can do a lot more things". In addition to playing a hard hitting run stopper in the backfield, one of the things Barret did last year was get 5 interceptions. "We went 10-2 last year before getting knocked out of the District playoffs by Pennridge. Deron was a big part of that. He‘s going to have to be pretty good for us this year because he‘s the best player we have coming back".
Barrett has been running indoor and outdoor track at Cheltenham since 9th grade. As a freshman at Cheltenham, Barrett was the conference 100 meter champion. As a sophomore Barrett won the 100 and 200 meter Suburban One Liberty Conference championships. Coach stressed to us, "Deron is an electronic 10.8 100 meter runner".
Deron will be running track in the spring this year, but he is not running track this winter. As Coach Groh tells it, "Deron decided to spend the entire winter in the weight room this year. He wants to come back bigger, stronger and faster this year".
Have any schools been recruiting Deron Barret?
"Penn State, Maryland, and Syracuse have all asked for film on Barret. Coach Vanderlinden from Penn State has called me to ask about Deron".
How has Deron responded to this early recruiting?
"Like I said, he's been in the weight room all winter. He wants it. I've never had a kid with early offers, but Deron might be the first one. But, he's just taking it all in. He's a really nice kid".
