Offers Beginning to Roll In

With 3 offers already in hand, Kurt Mattes is the 2nd member of the Mattes family to be highly recruited. Lion News recently interviewed Kurt to see what he is thinking. What 3 schools have already offered? What other schools are expressing interest? How will his brother's presence at Notre Dame affect his decision?

Name: Kurt Mattes
Position: OL
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 260 pounds
40 Speed:4.8 seconds
Hometown/School: Plymouth, PA (Wyoming Valley West HS)

Two years ago Brian Mattes was one of the top offensive line recruits in Pennsylvania and signed with Notre Dame. For the upcoming recruiting season brother Kurt Mattes looks to be in for the same treatment. Kurt had a very successful junior season that ended with his making honorable mention AAA All-State as a tight end. On defense, Kurt had 50 tackles, with 10 for loss and 5 sacks. On offense, he accounted for 15 pancake blocks, 14 receptions for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kurt has also demonstrated his athletic ability on the basketball court for Wyoming Valley West and definitely has athletic ability in his genes. His dad (David) played basketball at East Stroudsburg and a cousin (John Paluck) was a lineman for Pitt and the Washington Redskins in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Although Kurt has played tight end in high school, most of the interest in Mattes seems to be as an offensive tackle. He told us that he received offers from Pitt, Virginia and Vanderbilt. Kurt also said that Penn State, Northwestern, Boston College, Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Stanford and Notre Dame are among the other major schools showing significant interest.

We asked Kurt where he had made unofficial visits so far. He said, "This weekend I was at Pittsburgh. Last weekend I was at Penn State. A few weeks ago I was at Northwestern. And back in January I was at Virginia." He continued, "In the fall I went to Penn State (Temple game), Virginia (Wake Forest game), Notre Dame (Navy game), and Pittsburgh (Syracuse game)." Any other visits planned? "None as of right now."

How was Pitt's junior day?

"It was nice. (I went with) my parents. They showed us around the facilities and watched the basketball game (against Villanova). It's a really nice place. They seem to be doing things right there."

Dick Anderson is recruiting Mattes for Penn State. We asked Kurt how he enjoyed Penn State's junior day?

"That went well. It was the same thing. A tour of the facilities and then a basketball game. They played Michigan State. They mentioned that they're interested." Which coaches did he talk to? "Pretty much of all them." What did Joe have to say? "Just telling me what a good place Penn State is, stuff like that."

We asked Kurt what he liked about Penn State. "It's close to home. They have great facilities. They seem to be doing the right things."

Given that he is close to his brother who is already at Notre Dame, it would seem that Kurt would be very interested in Notre Dame. Is his brother trying to sell Notre Dame to him?

"We talk about it. He's not pressuring me into coming there or anything like that. We just talk about it." Is going to Notre Dame something he would consider? "Absolutely." Has Notre Dame mentioned an offer yet? "I've had them look at some film. So I'm waiting to hear back from them." How much of a factor is his brother's presence? "Not much. I'm going to end up wherever I feel most comfortable. (It's where) I'll be spending the next five years of my life so that's really not going to have an affect."

We asked Kurt if he had a favorite at this point. He said, "I'm pretty much interested in everyone right now." Does any school stand out? Kurt chuckled, "The schools that have offered me."

What is Kurt looking for in a school? "A good education. Good people. A good football program."

We asked Kurt about his plans for football camps this summer. "I wasn't planning on it." How about Nike camps? "As of right now no plans on it, no."
