Lion News recently spoke to Lincoln, NY HS head football coach Sean O'Connor about his star WR Nyan Boateng. Early reports had indicated that Boateng would be one of the most heavily recruited WR's in the East this year, and in our recent interview coach O'Connor brought us up to date with Boateng's recruitment.
Nyan Boateng is a 6'2", 190-pound WR who has led the New York City PSAL League is receptions, yardage and touchdown receiving for two years in a row. This past season, Nyan had 44 receptions, 920 yards, and 17 TD's receiving. He also scored on a kickoff return for the Railsplitters.
Coach O'Connor spoke about Nyan's talents, "Offensively, he's unbelievable. He's on another level. Defensively, he's still better than everyone else on the field, but his future is on offense at wide receiver. The thing about Nyan is he's so smart. He never makes the same mistake twice".
How fast is Nyan?
"Nyan ran a 4.4 forty, last year, at the Rex Plex Combine in East Rutherford, NJ, down near the Meadowlands where the Giants play. He was invited to that National Junior Combine in San Antonio and he ran a 4.9 down there, but all the athletes were talking about how they time everyone down there. It was like nobody ran fast. He did a 40 inch vertical jump down there".
Nyan is being recruited by a who's who of Big East and Big10 schools right now. "Syracuse was the first to offer. Pitt, West Virginia, Michigan State, Penn State, and Maryland have all offered. Phone calls and letters are coming in from Iowa, Virginia, and Miami".
Has Nyan been able to attend any junior days?
"Nyan attended a junior day at Maryland on a last minute kind of thing. He plays basketball and we have a great team at Lincoln. We have Sebastian Telfair and he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I don't know if you've heard of him, but he's pretty amazing. Nyan plays basketball every weekend and he hasn't really been able to get away yet. He plays in the PSAL semifinals this weekend (editors note - Lincoln HS won their PSAL semifinal game and has advanced to the PSAL Championship game), and if they win that game he'll get to play in Madison Square Garden. Nyan is a good basketball player too, he's not just out there. He averages 18 points a game in basketball, but his future is in football. We have guys telling us he has a future at WR".
Nyan has been invited to several Junior Days by the schools that have offered him a scholarship, including Penn State. When we asked Coach O'Connor about that, he stated "Oh yeah, Penn State invited Nyan, but they know he's playing basketball now so they just thought it might be best for him to come down there in May. He's going down there anyway for the Nike Combine and he's going to get the full tour of the school that weekend".
Brian Norwood had a pretty amazing year recruiting New York athletes last year, we wondered if he was handling Nyan's recruitment. "Yeah, Coach Norwood is recruiting Nyan. He's a nice guy. A great guy".
How did Nyan get an early scholarship offer? "I gave Coach Norwood a tape. They saw it and liked what they saw and offered Nyan right away".
It seems as if Penn State is recruiting Nyan very hard. "The new coach, Galen Hall, called here and spoke to us about Penn State wanting to throw the ball more".
Coach O'Connor spoke briefly about some of Nyan's awards, "Nyan was named to the MSG Elite Team this past year. That includes North Jersey, the City, Long Island, and even lower Connecticut. He was one of five finalists for the New York and Long Island Player of the Year. I think Matt Hahn from Long Island won that award. That kid is tough, he's a real player. Nyan was also named to Tom Lemming's Pre Season All American Team".
Just before we got off the phone with Coach O'Connor, he mentioned one more thing, "We're looking forward to having Coach Paterno come back to Brooklyn. Everyone loves him around here. We want to take him down to Coney Island and buy him one of those Nathan's hot dogs".
"Offensively, he's unbelievable"
