Garrett Graham topped off a productive junior by leading Brick Memorial to the Central Jersey Group IV championship, the first such title for his school. He was a big factor in the championship game with 4 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Garrett also garnered a number of personal honors as his 37 receptions for 760 yards and 5 touchdowns led to his selection as first team Associated Press All State and first team All Shore. Lion News recently checked in with Garrett and talked with him about recruiting.
Although Garrett also played defensive back and defensive end, he is being recruited as tight end or wide receiver. We asked him what he thought he did best on the football field.
Graham told us, "I'm pretty versatile. I can play on the line. I can be split out or I can be flexed out about 5 yards. I've got good hands and good speed when I'm being chased. I get a lot of yards after the catch. I averaged 19 yards after the catch."
Garrett has received no offers as of yet but is attracting lots of interest. He was invited to Miami's junior day and attended a football game (versus Wake Forest) at the University of Virginia last season. What other schools has be been hearing from?
"Syracuse, Michigan State, Boston College. Virginia Tech has contacted me a lot actually. NC State, Maryland, Penn State."
We asked Graham what he was looking for in a school. He replied, "Pretty much location, and I also want to play in the ACC or the Big Ten. I guess I'm just looking at the program and the recruiting class that I'll be going in with. I want to stay on the east coast. Probably go south. I'm not really sure though."
We asked him if he had any favorites at this point. "Miami obviously. They're a powerhouse." Though he was invited, Garrett elected not to attend Miami's junior day. "It was too expensive. It wasn't worth it."
Any other favorites? "Definitely Virginia Tech and Michigan State. They're probably my top three (including Miami). Virginia Tech has a great program. I looked up their players and how they've been doing. It just looks like they have a good program and they can go somewhere. I have to go to Virginia Tech on April 24 for a photo shoot for the All American game next year. Hopefully I'll get selected for that." And Michigan State? "They've been sending me a lot of stuff and they've been recruiting me."
We asked Garrett if he received any other junior day invitations.
"Actually, not really. I was surprised. I didn't even get invited to the Rutgers one."
Does he plan to make any other unofficial visits? "I'm going to actually visit a lot of schools. I'm not sure which ones I'm going to go to because I got invited to all their spring practices. I have to actually plan out where I'm going to go, but I'm not sure yet."
Garrett will be attending the Nike camp at Penn State in mid-May. Does he have any interest in Penn State?
"I talked to their recruiting coordinator (Mike McQuery) and he pretty much just told me about the program. I've been just getting a lot of letters from them. I guess I'm very interested in Penn State. I'd love to go there. I'd like to get an official visit there. I don't know."
And how about summer camps?
"I'm going to go to a lot this year. I'm probably just going to go to one a day because I got invited to a lot. So I'm just going to have to skip around go to a couple."
