Lion News recently had the opportunity to talk to Monessen High School Athletic Director Jason Minniti about star MLB Ernest Williams. When asked to describe the talented LB prospect, the first thing he stated was, "He's a stud!".
A Pennsylvania Football News Class A 2nd team all state LB selection last fall, Williams is a 6-2 240lbs MLB who has attracted a lot of attention after his stellar junior season.
Playing both ways last fall, fullback and linebacker, Ernest helped his Monessen Greyhounds get out to an 8-0 start on their way to an 11-1 record. After two playoffs wins, the Greyhounds eventually dropped a 22-7 WPIAL playoff encounter with eventual WPIAL Class A champion Springdale.
Williams patterns his game after former Monessen star Jamie Reeder. Reeder, after a standout career at Monessen, played for the Akron Zips before going on to the NFL where he played for both the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.
"Athletically, they are very comparable", said Minniti. "Jamie was more of a straight line runner, Mic - Ernest's nickname is Mic - is more flexible, more athletic, and very fast. But Jason had an incredible work ethic, Ernest is now starting to understand what it takes".
Ernest plays basketball in the winter, but he'll play football in college. His sister is a D1 basketball player at West Virginia. Will that play into where Ernest goes to college?
"He's receiving mail from all the big schools in the Big10 and the Big East. He's got boxes of mail now. FSU, Miami and Notre Dame recently started to inquire about Ernest. I know the Miami letter got a smile out of him".
Does that mean the Hurricanes are his leader?
"Ernest doesn't have any leaders at this point. No coaches have stopped by the school yet because we don't have a head football coach right now and we are still trying to work that out. After we get a head coach I expect to see all these schools come in here to talk about Ernest".
We found out that Ernest plans to attend both the Penn State Nike Camp as well as Joe Butler's Metro Index Camp at the UMPC Center at Pitt, something that naturally led me to ask how the in state schools are doing with Ernest.
"Both Pitt and Penn State are actively recruiting Ernest very hard. He probably gets more mail from them than any other schools".
Can you sum up Ernest in one statement?
"He's a man among boys!"
"He Plays Like a Man Among Boys!"
