DC Line Prospect Talks Recruiting

Kevin Wiggins is one of the top college prospects in the Washington DC area. What colleges has the offensive line prospect visited? Does he have a favorite? How does Penn State figure into his recruiting?

Name: Kevin Wiggins
Position: OT
Height: 6'8"
Weight: 320 pounds
Hometown/School: Washington, DC (Dunbar HS)

Mammoth OT Kevin Wiggins joins Dunbar teammate James McDonald as one of the leading prep prospects in the Washington DC area. Wiggins, a second team All-Met selection as a junior, played only on offense last year and registered, by his own count, between 35 and 40 pancake blocks. Lion News recently spoke with Kevin to catch up on the latest in his recruiting process.

Wiggins has already received a written scholarship offer from Maryland and verbal offers from Kent State and Miami (FL). What schools are showing the most interest in Kevin?

He told us, "Maryland, UVA, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Miami, Florida."

Did he have any favorite college teams when he was growing up?

"I was rooting for Penn State but I guess that changes now. I'm part of a winning team right now so I kind of want to go to college and be part of a winning team. And Penn State's kind of down right now." Has he hard much from Penn State? "I get mail from them and things like that but they haven't offered me yet."

Larry Johnson recruits the DC area for Penn State but Kevin has not met yet Coach Johnson.

We asked Kevin whether he had made any unofficial visits yet.

"I've been to Maryland and UVA. I went down to UVA for spring practice and I went to Maryland for spring practice and junior day. I liked what I saw for the most part." Any other visits being planned? "I do want to go see Miami and I do want to see Florida, those two schools." Will be he attending any Nike camps? "I think I'm going to the Nike camp at Penn State."

Does he have any favorites at this point?

"I don't really have a favorite team right now because I'm still deciding but as far as home teams go, they really have the upper hand right now." We asked if he considered Maryland and Virginia to be the home teams. He replied, "Yeah. Maryland is probably a 15 minute drive with traffic and UVA is probably a two hour drive. I want to stay close to home but I do want to get away a little bit, not too far though."

How about the possibility of Kevin and teammate James McDonald going to the same school?

"We joke about it. It's a possibility because we're getting recruited by the same schools." Will that be a major factor in Kevin's decision? "Not really."
