With the advent of the internet, rumors about recruiting get floated constantly. "Player X" likes this school. "Player Y" wants to play quarterback not linebacker. "Player Z" visited campus this weekend and loved it.
The latter example seemed to surface recently about the #1 ranked player in the country, Greenbelt, Md. wide receiver Derrick Williams in connection with Penn State. Did the 6'0'', 193 lb lightning quick receiver visit Happy Valley for a look around?
"I haven't done it yet. I'm not even sure if I'm going to take that. Maybe my dad or my coach would know better if I was going to take a visit there. Probably in more time I'll know."
"I'm not even sure about the visits yet," said Derrick. "Right now, we're just wide open."
Although the rumors of him being on campus turned out to be false, Derrick does have legit interest in the Penn State football program?
"A school like that, you've got to have interest in them because they're like one of the founders of [college] football. I know they are sleeping right now, but if somebody wakes it up, there is going to be a giant there."
Instead of taking visits this summer, Derrick has been diligently working in the classroom, hoping to get enough credits to graduate from high school early and enroll in college in January. He is currently enrolled in an English class.
Derrick has visited Penn State twice in the past--once while just a seventh grader and then after his tenth grade year when he took home the MVP of the State College Nike Camp. Will the Nittany Lions be the recipient of a visit in the near future from the Insiders #1 recruit in the nation?
"It's pretty likely. They've got a lot of good coaches. I still haven't had enough time to develop a relationship with them because the August and September recruiting hasn't come up yet," explained Derrick about the time frame when college coaches can yet again call the players. "I have a relationship with Coach (Larry) Johnson because he's the one recruiting my area. But I'm looking forward to [developing] a relationship with all the coaches [from all different schools] pretty soon."
