Cabrillo (CA) athlete Lydell Sargeant knew since he was a young boy that he wanted to play at Penn State. In Pennsylvania you are either a Pitt fan or a Penn State fan. Sargeant has no qualms about where his allegiance lies.
"I've liked Penn State since I was a young kid," said Sargeant
Well if you have an offer, and they are your childhood favorite does this mean a commitment may be coming soon?
"I'm not saying it couldn't, but right now I'm planning on taking all of my visits."
Sargeant counts twelve offers currently from the likes of Penn State, Stanford, Oregon, Utah, UNC, Idaho, Nevada, Fresno State, San Diego State, BYU, Portland State, and Sacramento State. Of those 12 schools, Lydell has named 4 official visits Penn State, Oregon (11/12), Utah (11/19), and UNC (12/3).
The versatile Sargeant has offers as a RB, CB, WR, and as an athlete. So where does he fit at Penn State?
"They told me I would come in as a corner, who will return kicks and punts, and play some flanker."
We asked Sargeant for his take on the struggles of the Nittany Lion football team this year, and whether or not he thought it hurt their standing with recruits?
"They are definitely struggling on offense, the defense is tough. The struggles are bad, but good for recruiting."
"New recruits realize they have the chance to come in and play right away. They will have a chance from day one. The team needs athletes."
Sargeant is very adamant about his love of Pennsylvania. He was a student in the Gateway school district for 7 years, and still maintains weekly contact with several of his friends.
"I get a call every weekend they let me know how they did, and I tell them about my games."
Sargeant's father is an active member of the US Air Force. When he got his new orders 3 years ago Lydell was forced to leave the comfort of Monroeville, for the hustle and bustle of Lompoc, CA.
"It's definitely different out here, it was culture shock. You get used to it after a while but I miss it back home."
Sargeant takes one month out of each summer and returns home to his roots in Monroeville. He doesn't do it for the fun of it, he's all about business.
"When I go back I pal around here and there, but I like to go back and workout with the guys preparing for the football season."
Could there be a chance that Sargeant will become a regular workout partner of his old friend from Gateway Justin King? Could the two become college teammates?
"I can't tell you that." laughed Sargeant."
Sargeant and his Cabrillo teammates are having a very good season. They are currently (7-1). Lydell has run for 1,400 yards and 22 touchdowns. Cabrillo will play Friday night and then board a plane at 6:00 AM PST on Saturday and head for State College. Sargeant will be at Penn State until Monday.
