Coming or Going?

Remember back in your freshman year of high school, you would go to your school dances and sit there hoping someone would dance with you? Then someone would come ask you to dance, but were they sincere or did they feel sorry for you? That little analogy is very much like Penn State recruiting of late.

Name: Andre Mathis
Position: LB
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 225 pounds
40 Speed: 4.6 seconds
Hometown/School: Erie, Pa. (Cathedral Prep)

If anyone would have asked me a week ago where I thought Andre Mathis would end up? I would have without hesitation said Penn State. The Erie Cathedral Prep (PA) linebacker had taken unofficial trips to Penn State, and he was scheduled for a (11/5) official visit. Now the odds of Mathis (6-2, 225, 4.6) ending up in State College look real good, the disappointing thing for Nittany Lion fans is that Andre may be wearing a different color uniform.

Andre was scheduled to be a part of a very nice group of prospects taking official visits over the weekend. After talking to a few of the player's who did attend they had not seen Mathis on campus. That led to a phone call to Erie Cathedral coach Mike Mischler who informed us there had been a slight change of plans.

"I thought Andre's dad was going to call them and change the date, he thought I was going to call so there was a miscommunication,"

Within minutes of my calling Mischler he had just hung up with a member of the Penn State staff who asked why Mathis never showed up?

"They are not real happy right now, but it wasn't done on purpose. I think Andre will re-schedule the trip."

Upon asking Mathis if he is likely to re-schedule, the answer was not so clear-cut.

"I am really not sure right now." The 4-star athlete was blown away by his visit to East Lansing, so impressed that he is going back this weekend for an unofficial trip.

"I really like the coaches there. I just had a real comfortable feeling there it felt right."

Could a 2^nd trip mean a commitment may be forthcoming?

"It's possible, I just want to get another look at the school."

Mathis contends that no matter what he decides this weekend he will still more than likely take a few more visits.

"I still plan on going to OSU and Tennessee."

So where does that put Penn State?

"I'll have to see after my other visits."

Abraham Lincoln (NY) wide receiver Nyan Boateng was originally scheduled to visit Penn State over the weekend, he too cancelled for Michigan State. According to other published reports that we have yet to confirm the Nittany Lions appear to have fallen out of the running with Boateng as well.
