Athlete Returning to Pennsylvania

Lydell Sargeant, a gifted athlete from Cabrillo Senior High School in Lompoc, CA, has decided to play his college football at Penn State. Sargeant, who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, discusses his decision to return to his home state.

Name: Lydell Sargeant
Position: Athlete
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 188 pounds
40-Yard dash: 4.47 seconds
School: Cabrillo Senior HS, Lompoc, CA

When did Lydell inform the Nittany Lion coaching staff of his decision?

"This morning," Sargeant said. "I wanted to call all the other coaches that were recruiting me and tell them that I wouldn't be able to go."

Lydell called Penn State Defensive Coordinator Tom Bradley at around 10:30 AM eastern time.

"When I came down there a couple of weeks ago, I just felt like it was the best. The atmosphere and the way I felt around everything, that was a big, important factor. I lived there (Pennsylvania) for 8 years, so it's kind of like going back home. With the academic situation and available playing time, I felt it was the best thing for me."

What position will he play at PSU?

"They want me as just an athlete. I'm going to return kickoffs and punts and play flanker, what [Gerald] Smith plays for them now. I'm going to play that position."

So, he'll play offense full time?

"Yeah, I think so. I think I'm going in there just to kind of weigh it out and see what's going to happen."

It appears that he and good friend Justin King could be returning punts and kickoffs together.

"If we both are back there, it'll be something to look out for."

Is Sargeant planning another trip to PSU?

"I think we're going to go down there the beginning of January. My dad's going overseas for the war, so I'm going to try to get out there before he leaves. He leaves in late January, early February (for Afghanistan)."

Has he spoken to friends Derrick Williams, Sean Lee and Nyan Boateng recently?

"I told Justin [my decision] last night. I told Sean last night. I'm going to talk to Derrick and Boateng and see what they're going to do."

Lydell's team begins their playoff run this Friday.
