Michigan DE/LB Ed Johnson

Ed Johnson from Crockett Tech in Detroit Michigan has an offer from Penn State. He talks about whether or not he wants to play college football outside the state of Michigan.

Name: Ed Johnson
Position: DL / LB
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 260 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.75 (Bowling Green camp)
School: Crockett Technical High School, Detroit, Michigan

Ed played several positions this past season for Crockett Tech, including linebacker, defensive tackle, defensive end, tight end and running back to name a few.

"I've played everything on offense except quarterback," Johnson said.  "We had a couple of injuries this year."

According to Ed, he has offers from Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Indiana.

What do schools like about Ed?

"They like my size.  They say I'm quick for a big guy, and that they like how I look on film, aggressive."

Ed has already taken an official visit to Michigan State (12/7) and had "a really nice time."

He will fly to Penn State today with his grandmother for an official visit.  He also has an official visit scheduled to Michigan on January 18.

"Michigan is going to be my last visit.  I'm pretty fed up with it now.  I'm ready to make my decision.  I'm ready to just get it over with."

Is he leaning to a particular school?

"Not at the moment," he said.

Michigan and Penn State are recruiting Ed as a linebacker or defensive end, and Michigan State is recruiting him as a defensive end.

"I sort of want to play defensive end."

He received 1st team All-City honors, 1st team All-State honors, and also made the Michigan Dream Team.

Ed appears to want to leave the state of Michigan.

"Yeah, but I'm going to go to the best situation.  I want to leave the state.  If I had the chance, I'd get away as far as possible.  I just like getting away from home and getting different experiences.  It doesn't matter, but I just like to leave and be out on my own a lot."

Although Ed indicated that that does not necessarily mean Penn State is his favorite, it's apparent that the Nittany Lions are the only out-of-state choice at this time.

His grandmother would "somewhat" like him to stay in-state.

Like most prospects, Ed would like to play early in his career.  What schools look like they would offer Ed a chance at early playing time?

"Penn State and Michigan State," he said.

He has never been to Penn State, but he likes the location, the tradition, the fact that Penn State is part of the Big 10, and that Penn State, like the other schools on his list, is a good academic school.

Ed wants to major in Pre-Law.
