Timmons Makes College Choice

In an ironic twist, the school that was considered an afterthought a few weeks ago turned into one of the finalists. Penn State got in on the Knowledge Timmons sweepstakes very late, but apparently the proximity to his York County home was attractive. Timmons, who had narrowed down his final choices to Maryland and Penn State, made a verbal commitment to Penn State during a 3:00 PM press conference today.

Name: Knowledge Timmons
Position: CB,WR
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 175 pounds
40 Speed: 4.3 seconds

In addition to Maryland and Penn State, Timmons had also been considering Minnesota, North Carolina State, Boston College, West Virginia, and Connecticut. In the end, William Penn Head Coach Matt Ortega felt the decision came down to distance.

"I believe he wanted to stay closer to home, that led him to Maryland and Penn State," Ortega said.

Ortega felt that South Carolina would fit him and his desire to be a world-class sprinter. Although he is a football player, Timmons still has a strong love and desire for track.
As a senior, Timmons caught 29 passes for 291 yards and one touchdown while playing wide receiver for William Penn. On defense, Timmons was rarely challenged. According to Ortega, his offensive statistics are deceiving.

"We didn't have a lot of offensive weapons, so naturally Timmons was constantly double covered," Ortega said.

Still, a host of schools recognized his obvious talent and offered him a scholarship. The Nittany Lions were the fortunate victors.

"I felt it was the best fit for me," Timmons said of Penn State. "I want to be a part of the turnaround at Penn State."

Coach Ortega told me yesterday you were really torn between Penn State and Maryland, what led you to your decision?

"I had a gut feeling about Penn State, and I went with that feeling," Timmons said.

Are you planning on playing football and running track at Penn State?

"Yes, I will do both," Timmons said.

Just a few weeks ago Penn State seemed to be an afterthought, why the change?

"I felt it offered a better educational opportunity, and I felt like the coaches really cared about me," Timmons said.

What position will you play at Penn State?

"Safety or wide receiver," Timmons said.

What was your family's reaction to your decision?

"They were very happy, that I decided to stay close to home," Timmons said.

If you were to describe Knowledge Timmons to Penn State fans, what would you say?

"I am speedy, I'm aggressive, and I feel I'm very respectful and coachable," Timmons said.
