All-Star Game Updates

A trio of former Penn State football players will be competing in postseason All-Star games: Andrew Guman, Derek Wake and Paul Jefferson.

Safety Guman will represent the East squad in the East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco Jan. 15. Purdue’s Joe Tiller will coach the East.

Though he missed nearly three full games due to a collapsed lung, Guman was Penn State’s third-leading tackler in 2004. He had 43 solo stops, 24 assists and an impressive 6.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Linebacker Wake will play for the East squad in the Hula Bowl in Maui Jan. 22. Georgia’s Mark Richt will coach the East.

A starter at outside linebacker in his final season with the Lions, Wake had 58 tackles, four tackles for losses and a sack in 2004.

Official rosters for the Gridiron Classic, set for Jan. 15 in Orlando, will be released Jan. 5 and Jan. 6. Lion fullback Paul Jefferson is expected to play in the game. Jefferson was primarily a blocker for PSU in 2004, carrying only four times for three yards. He also caught 16 passes for 106 yards.

Ohio State’s Jim Tressel has signed on to coach the North squad in that game.

Postseason All-Star appearances are limited again this year, as the Blue-Gray Classic, slated for Christmas Day in Montgomery, Ala., was canceled for the second time in three years due to a lack of corporate sponsorship. -30-
