Scott Shirley talked about the opportunity, saying, "It was awesome! Our presentation was standing room only and really got a great response from a variety of programs like Nebraska, Arizona State, Kansas State and Texas A&M. It was great to simply have the opportunity to educate the nation on what we are doing at Penn State and get other programs to consider joining us in the future."
The goal, according to Shirley, was to take steps towards identifying student-athletes on their campuses who are leaders and ineterested in making a difference. As he said, "We also used the opportunity as a focus group to talk about some of the issues that other schools would face if they launched their own Lift for Life efforts."
He went on to say, "We got tremendous feedback on our session. In fact, Dr. Lapchick, Director of the NCAS, said that a lot of attendees were raving about our presentation."
Shirley, Jones and Costlow started the Lift for Life event back in 2003 and has raised more than $51,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association to aid in the fight against the disease for the 31,000 Americans who are afflicted with kidney cancer each year. The 2004 event alone raised in excess of $38,000.
