Behind the Scenes

Wondering how we put together the latest cover for Fight On State The Magazine, which features linebackers Dan Connor, Paul Posluszny and the Nittany Lion posed in a seemingly huge white expanse? Read on to discover a few trade secrets that made the image look a bit more dramatic than the actual scene was.

First of all, the expanse in question was not so huge, after all. The photo “studio” was actually set up in a small area outside the squad room of the Lasch Football Building, using seamless paper as a background and studio lighting. Since the backdrop itself was relatively small compared to the two rather large football players, Adobe Photoshop was used to extend it digitally and to remove portions of the light stands that were set up close to the athletes.

To get a better feel for what we are talking about, check out the series of unedited images from the shoot (we added photo credits on the images to prevent unauthorized usage) that follows this introduction. These are low-resolution images, but you'll get the ... ahem ... picture. Joe Rokita directed the shoot and took all photos. Mark Brennan handled the image editing.

Can you tell which photo was used for the cover?

The magazine, which mailed late last week, focuses on the past, present and future of “Linebacker U.” We'll have an update on newsstand availability later this week.
