Putting His Best Foot Forward

Penn State may have a myriad of kickers and punters (scholarship and walk-on) on the roster, but the Lions aren’t through bolstering their special teams yet. It appears they have already invited at least one local kicker to be a preferred walk-on with the Class of 2006.

Though Williamsport (Pa.) Loyalsock kicker/punter Dan Hutchins (5-11, 180) is still awaiting his first scholarship offer, he has already been invited to walk on to a program.

“Coach [Mike] McQueary has invited me to be a preferred walk-on at Penn State,” Hutchins said. “I’d like to see if I can earn a scholarship first.”

If his recent camp performances at Penn State and Pittsburgh are any indication of his ability, Hutchins may very well earn that scholarship.

Penn State: "They said they were looking for a punter. They [talked to] me, a kid from New York and a kid from Virginia. I haven’t really heard back since about the punting so we’ll see.”

Pittsburgh: "I won the kicking competition there. I had a punt of 60 yards and I kicked a 57-yard field goal.”

Hutchins is not finished with his summer camping. He will attend the Ray Guy kicking camp (7/22-7/23) at Upper St. Clair, Pa., and then it is on to Rutgers (8/6).

Hutchins took an unofficial visit during the spring to Akron

“I liked it, they have a lot of new facilities there,” Hutchins said.
