Nearly 100 Penn State football players pushed themselves to their physical limits and beyond for a worthy cause Friday in the third-annual Lift For Life strength and conditioning competition at Holuba Hall. Twenty-four four-man teams competed in 11 events, ranging from the bench press to the giant tire flip, all to raise money for the Kidney Cancer Association. The players have worked hard this summer getting ready for the 2005 season, but as offensive tackle Levi Brown put it, Nothing can prepare you for this.
Brown's squad of heavy hitters did well, though. Named the NAACP, the quartet of offensive linemen, which also included Charles Rush, Gerald Cadogan and Robert Price, finished second in the competition. The winning team, We Are Legend, included Nittany Lion captain Paul Posluszny along with Jim Shaw, Deon Butler and Jim Kanuch. You can see the top five teams at the bottom of this story.
Meanwhile, organizers estimated that this year's event generated about $30,000 and expect more money to roll in over the coming weeks. About 2,000 fans we're on hand for the action this year.
While the competition is enjoyable for onlookers, it is grueling for competitors, particularly the rookies. As freshman running back Lydell Sargeant said, I made the mistake of eating before this, but I got some of it out of me. The whole workout was hard. But it's for a good cause.
Since its inception two years ago, Lift For Life has grown by leaps and bounds. Former Nittany Lions Scott Shirley, Damone Jones and David Costlow organized the first Lift For Life in 2003 to raise awareness and much-needed funding for kidney cancer research. In its first two years of existence, Lift For Life raised more than $50,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association.
We will have extensive multi-media coverage of Life For Life in the coming days, including audio, video and photos. You can see a link to our first photo gallery above, as well as video of Nittany Lion quarterback Anthony Morelli and rookie wideout Derrick Williams.
